About Simon

From art school to the anvil

Blacksmith and Artist

Simon is a blacksmith and artist working from his forge on the Devon Dorset border. Alongside garden sculptures and gates and railings, he designs and creates contemporary ironwork of quality and beauty for all other aspects of the home and garden.

Simon's career in metalwork began in 1996 when he decided that the industrial design course he was studying was not going to allow him the artistic and creative freedom that is his passion. He left and joined the Design Metal HND at Plymouth College of Art, a course he had seen while completing his Foundation in Art.

Circle of Life Sculpture

"It was loud, dirty and full of sparks. I had to join."

Artistic Trajectory

Having discovered an unforeseen love for Blacksmithing Simon then went on to complete a BA Hons in Applied Arts specialising in metalwork.

Once his studies were finished he found work with an established Blacksmith, staying there for eight years before setting up his own forge on the Devon Dorset border. He can still be found working there today.

"I think it is this combination of understanding the design process, Blacksmithing technique and my love of creating modern, functional objects that gives my work its unique quality."

As well as bespoke gates, railings and other commissioned work for the home and garden Simon has also developed a range of products that are being sold in local shops and will soon be seen further afield.

"If you are going to make something that is used every day, make it beautiful."

Considering a Commission?

Simon's blacksmith studio and forge undertakes both individual commissions and larger landscape projects.

Each begins with a conversation about scale, context and installation.

From concept sketches through to fabrication and placement, every piece is developed with its setting in mind.
